With Nelson Mandela in hospital again for the forth time and with his condition this time described as serious, many people, including myself, believe that this might be his final hospital visit. He is almost 95 and lived an exemplary life. He also is old and frail, and it is ignorant of us to believe that he is immortal. We will all die some die and all of us deserve to do so with dignity. So in recognition of all that Mandela has done for South Africa and the world I decided to repost this in honor of a national treasure – Nelson Mandela.

With my thirty something birthday coming up (a queer never reveals his true age after 30) in just over a month I took some time to sit back and reflect on my life. After all I am now closer to forty than I am to twenty. And isn’t it strange how different we view life while you are in your twenties than how you view life when you are in your thirties? As I measured how my life has changed since I was 20 and how different it is now than what I expected, I came to ask myself a shocking question – Have I become a Stepford Fag?

I am still alive and well. Mostly alive and slightly well. I blame Saturn. Or Jupiter. Whichever is being an asshole. Uranus seems too obvious. You see for the last couple of months I have been feeling a little less gay than usual. I have been exhibiting some odd symptoms that apart from being annoying as fuck also has been adversely affecting my husband. Having to live in Polar conditions when it is summer has taken its toll not only on my husband but our animals too. The animals have been preparing for winter since December, and autumn only just arrived this week. Everyone in the house has been cuddling up under blankets except me. I felt like I was living in a sauna and I thought everyone else were crazy for not realizing this. So this week I decided to visit our village healer (otherwise known as my GP) to get some answers. But the answer I got just pissed me off.

We often time forget how powerful words are. I grew up with the rhyme “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me“. But we all know that not to be true. Words do hurt. They hurt more than what people may think. This powerful one minute video by six Durban University of Technology and Graphic Design students is a very powerful and aims at creating awareness of all forms of discrimination.
